How to: Video Interviews

3-minute read

As video interviewing becomes more popular in our digital world, candidates increasingly are asked to have a video interview with prospective employers. For many, this is a new experience and so we have put together some top tips to help you through.

  1. It is still an interview.

Don’t let the fact that it is not a traditional conversation change your perception of the situation. For all intensive purposes, consider it like you would a normal interview. Although it is different, do bare in mind that it is still a meeting with a prospective employer. Be professional, engaged, and interested.

  1. Prepare

Make sure that you locate a quiet place to have your interview. Consider what your interviewer will see on their screen. Think about the room behind you, and whether there’s a chance of any people interrupting you. Finally, ensure that your internet works.

  1. Dress appropriately (and not just from the waist up)

Though you might be in sitting in your house for your interview, it is worth dressing appropriately. Dress as you would if you were going to meet them in-person.

  1. Don’t fiddle/click around/check your emails

Like any professional meeting, it is important to give your prospective employer your full attention. Close any other windows/applications on your screen so that there is nothing to distract you as you have your interview. Ensure also that you won’t receive any notifications mid-conversation.

  1. Don’t forget to disconnect when you’ve finished

After you have thanked your interviewer for their time and said goodbye, make sure that you have closed the conversation and disconnected completely before continuing with your day…
