AI is an opportunity for design and innovation
With AI widely expected to bring about the ‘second industrial revolution’, there’s no question it will be the biggest change in our world for the next 30 years – and beyond.
AI is already here, usually working in the background, for example when large data sets need to be analysed. This is to be expected, tasks that would take the human brain longer. But did you know AI also completes X-ray diagnosis and recommends medical treatments? AI is being used from flying planes to powering recommendations in Spotify. You probably interact with AI more than you know – who is helping you at a call centre? Or who is scheduling a meeting for you?
When it comes to tasks that boost efficiency and productivity, the bots will continue to take over. Industries that are defined by efficiency and productivity will suffer job losses. According to a CBRE/Genesis report, up to 50 per cent of jobs in Western societies might be replaced by machines by 2025. At the same time, continues the same report, 50 percent of the jobs that we’ll have in 2025 don’t exist yet. So what we call ‘work’ will undergo tremendous changes, but there is a positive and that comes through embracing AI.
Looking at design, tools like The Grid are already being used in replace of web designers and developers. Molly, The Grid’s bot, has created hundreds of thousands of web pages and through those actions is learning more every day. The Grid is able to analyse user content and create layouts that are well designed. It can pick colour schemes, fonts, and will optimise across different platforms. There’s no technical hassle and it can create a site in minutes.
AI as a tool for design and innovation.
Designers and innovators will need to embrace AI. Success will come for those who work with AI and use their understanding of human behaviour to create more impactful experiences directed to one user, efficiently, rather than for the masses. Personalisation is a hot topic across design and innovation and nothing can power it better than AI. People who work in design and innovation will need to build skills in mathematics (statistics and data analytics), sociology (building an understanding of how these theories can be woven into experiences), and psychology (understanding how users will act in different situations).
AI will redefine work.
The innovation that we create through AI is going to redefine our jobs and how we work. New AI tools such as The Grid should be looked at as an opportunity. People will have to up-skill to learn how to use them, create them, exploit them and redefine their roles. We expect what some companies are calling a ‘bionic’ approach while we are working towards AI in the mainstream, combining both machine and human intelligence for the best solutions. But it will be those who embrace AI that will succeed.
The consultancy will continue to strengthen.
