5 Ways to make your LinkedIn profile stand out – for all the right reasons

Most of us have a LinkedIn profile; possibly one that we set up years ago and then forgot about.  But do you realise that you could be missing out in a big way by not making yours optimised?  Do you only stand out from the rest because yours is so lacking in the right things?   It is well worth taking the time to update your LinkedIn profile as it is a great way of networking and attracting new contacts, even gaining work.

So next time you are idly clicking around on your laptop, reading the news and Tweeting or Facebooking, how about you spend that time productively and take a few minutes to update LinkedIn?

Here are our tips that will enable you to boost your profile quickly and effectively; if it feels like too much to do at once, split them down into one a day and before you know it your LinkedIn bio will be knocking the socks off plenty of others.

1.Check out your groups

Have you signed up to far too many or absolutely zilch? Check out your list now and be ruthless when it comes to getting rid of those that are not relevant.  Swop these for ones that do look interesting and are related in some way to what you do.

2. Are your responsibilities about you?

Are they related to what you do now or what you did years ago when you were an intern? If you have added to what you do or majorly moved up in the business world, tell everyone about it.  Also check your job title is spot on as some people may search for people like you according to this.

3. Is your URL still gobbledygook?

Everyone is given a generic URL when they sign up but it is not at all memorable or related to you.  Take the time to change this and add in your name or what you do, for example:  switch Robert1389094 for RobertJames (your name) or RobertGraphics or RobertCopywriter. Throw in your middle initial if your name is already taken.

4. Get those recommendations rolling in

You can never have too many recommendations and they are a great way of showing others how great you are and what talents you have.  When would-be employers or networkers look at your profile they will have no doubts about how awesome you are.  Ask people that you have worked with or for to send you one, telling them why you think they are the perfect person to deliver; you can even offer to return the favour.

5. Make your photo eye-catching

Make it attractive, professional and eye-catching.  Don’t use personal photographs or frivolous selfies.  Aim for a classic look – even black and white photos can look ultra-classy. Try to use an image that portrays your personality in a unique way so people will feel drawn to you.  It’s all about marketing yourself correctly.

And there you go.  There are of course many other things that you can do to boost your LinkedIn profile but start this way and you sure will be on the right track.
